What I Should Have Done Today

Something. Anything. Admittedly, the day’s not over yet, but so far it has been One of Those Days where you waver between bed and the internet and occasionally leave your room for food. Pretty much. I’m not exactly proud of it, but it’s okay to do that every now and again, and since most of the time I’m either at Olin or gallivanting around the country or trying to squeeze home into a few weeks, I don’t usually encounter Those Days.

Sweden, however, has been like starting winter break over.

1. It’s darker. And colder. While probably not actually a primary reason for my laziness, it’s definitely a lot more appealing to stay in bed longer when it’s not as bright or enticing outside.

2. My classes haven’t started yet. This semester I’m taking three classes. Three. I will also only be in all three for 5 weeks (April, basically, which is a shitty time for it, but oh well). None of them are engineering classes, and none of them have started yet. My first and most legit class, “Sustainable Water Management in the Baltic Region”, is an online course that starts on Monday. It’s a master’s level class in the earth science department, which means it will probably be jumping into the deep end, but since it’s my only real class and I care about it… hopefully I will survive and learn some cool stuff. My second class, Basic Swedish 1, starts the following Tuesday (I think. It was written somewhere, but I haven’t heard anything recently) and meets for like 4 hours a week through the end of May. I suspect that I will already know a decent amount of Swedish at that point, since I will have been here almost a month, so also not too concerned. My last class is on Swedish Art and Music and runs for 5 weeks starting at the end of March. I could only kind of get farther from Olin curriculum…

ANYWAY, as a result of this lack of class, I have been doing rather little compared to my usual routine. I’ve been trying to get out a bit and go to activities and meet people, but not as much as I maybe should’ve or would’ve liked.

My first class starts officially on Monday, though, so I should be back into the swing of things soon :)

Hopefully soon I will also post some kind of recap of my first 3 weeks in Sweden, which includes trips to both Stockholm and Copenhagen. Wooo study abroad!

I am a great lover of words—especially wordplay—but somehow writing never works well for me. I have tried periodically throughout my life to keep journals and/or blogs, to varying degrees of failure.

This semester, however, I am living in Uppsala, Sweden. This special adventure case seemed like a worthwhile reason to attempt it once again. I make no promises, but I will do my best to post occasionally on the escapades, travels, and every day occurrences of living in a foreign country.

We’ll see how this goes…
